Has the brand (company) disclosed the overall carbon footprint of all sold origin-destination transport?

Where Generic Carbon Emissions Question 2 is about the carbon footprint of 'owned operations': This question is about the products sold, technically referred to as 'Scope 3' emissions, according to the GHG Protocol, see e.g. p.26.

The majority of the travel industry’s carbon impact comes from the products sold, where air transport is a major contributor. Most travel agencies and tour operators brands do not own airlines. Some do, such as Corendon and Thomas Cook. These travel companies also make use of other airlines for their product portfolio's. Carbon emissions figures from owned and externally purchased air transport products can anyway be estimated, managed and reduced by the B2C travel companies.

Ways to reduce the travel package carbon footprint are e.g.:
- prefer direct flights
- prefer overland transport to airports instead of short flights
- stimulate customers to book destinations at shorter distances
- compensate flight CO2 emissions
- stimulate customers to compensate CO2 emissions

Best practices are found with e.g. Sawadee, this travel company calculates and publishes the total carbon emissions of products sold in a year. The bulk of these emissions were produced by origin-destination transport (81%). Therefore, for this question we require travel companies to report at least the carbon emissions of all (air, bus or train) transport sold to customers. This may be reported:
- total carbon emissions of products sold per year
- total carbon emissions of origin-destination transport of products sold per year

Please make sure that Tour Operators that have their own (air) transport operations, should also include emissions from (air) transport executed by external (air) transport companies.

Please note that we only take footprint into account that are not older than 2.5 years. I.e., to find the oldest eligible footprint, count back 18 months. E.g., if it is now January 2012, 18 months earlier it was July 2009. Therefore, footprint cannot be before 2009. But if it is now July 2012, 18 months ago it was January 2010. Therefore, the footprint cannot be before 2010).

Ranking Guidelines

A ‘Yes’ is applicable when:

  • Travel companies publish the absolute overall product carbon footprint, at least covering all origin-destination transport sold to customers. Preferred, but not required for this question yet, travel companies are encouraged to disclose data on KPI's such as the (average) carbon footprint per pax (=per travel product), the (average) carbon footprint per pax per day, the (average) carbon footprint per km air flight.
  • The carbon footprint data may also be published on websites such as the Carbon Disclosure Project Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)).


Yes:

  • In [year] [Brand] disclosed the annual carbon footprint of the overall sold [travel products / origin-destination transport]: [amount].

No:

  • [Brand] explicitly mentions not to disclose is carbon footprint, for the reason [...]

?:

  • [Brand] has provided figures for its carbon footprint, but it does not specify clearly if this includes at least all air travel resulting from its business.
  • [Brand] does not communicate any information on its carbon footprint on its website. Sustainability information should be easily accessible for consumers to make responsible choices.
