Question

Does the brand (company) report the recycled input materials it uses for its product offering and/or new electronics used in its own operations as a percentage of its total input materials?

Reference

In providing services such as subscriptions for Internet and mobile phones, the main environmental challenge of the telecom sector—apart from climate change—is transitioning to a circular economy. After all, the networks and electronics that telecom providers use for their services, as well as the hardware they lease or sell to consumers consist almost entirely of non-renewables. Thus, to contribute to a circular economy, it is essential that brands use as many recycled input materials as possible, rather than buying equipment composed of virgin materials.

As such, this question refers to Disclosure 301-2 of the Global Reporting Initiative. Companies are asked to report the percentage of recycled input materials used as a percentage of total input materials used. For now we do not ask companies to achieve a specific percentage. Furthermore, the reported percentage for a specific year may refer to either the manufacturing of all its consumer products and services (e.g., hardware appliances such as phones), to electronic equipment the company purchased for its own operations (e.g., network cables), or to both.

Ranking Guidelines

Yes: Company reports recycled input materials as a percentage of total input materials, and clearly mentions for what these input materials are used (e.g., consumer hardware appliances, electronics for own operations).

No: The company explicitly states to not report such a percentage.

?: The company mentions nothing about a percentage of recycled input materials, or it does mention a percentage, but not for what these input materials are used.

Answering Guidelines
