Question

Does the brand (company) have clear objectives to minimize waste, by reducing, re-using and recycling, and does the brand annually report the results?

Concerning the company’s own waste (specifically: for fashion companies including textile waste, for food companies including food waste ), companies should report the total amount of waste in tonnes by type for each of the applied disposal methods, as described in section G4-EN23 of the Global Reporting Initiative, and according to criterion 11 'Usage of Natural Resources' and 12 'Resource Management' of the Sustainability Code 1 2 from the German Council of Sustainable Development. Objectives to minimize waste should be time-bound and be expressed as a percentage of the total waste in a waste category in a certain base year.

Net waste reductions can be expressed absolute (weight or volume) or relative to the quantity of sold product (weight or volume per weight or volume).

  • Good practice examples:
  • Food

- Neumarkter Lammsbräu: in terms of reporting on measures implemented and results (see link, pages 47-53).

  • Fashion

- Hermès: in terms of reporting on measures implemented and results (see link, pages 133-153).

- Kering: in terms of reporting on results (see link, pages 111-112)

- Fenix Outdoor: in terms of reporting on results (see link, starting on page 16)

Answering guidelines

Answer Yes:

  • [Brand] reports the annual waste by type, weight and way of disposal and has reduced the net waste from [...] to [...] (see link/page...) by [reducing ... / re-using .../ recylcing rates of ...].
  • [Brand] reports its annual waste footprint and has reduced the net waste from [...] to [...] (see link/page...) by [reducing ... / re-using .../ recylcing rates of ...].
  • [Brand] implements several measures to minimize the environmental impact of its generated waste, such as [provide examples]. Furthermore, concrete aggregate results regarding its waste materials footprint are reported.
  • [Brand] implements several measures to minimize the environmental impact of its generated waste, such as [...] and reports a total waste material footprint of [...] tonnes.
  • [Brand] implements several measures to minimize the environmental impact of its generated waste, such as [...] and reports a total waste material footprint of [...] tonnes. [Brand] estimates, that per year [...] tonnes of waste are [reduced / re-used / recylced*].
  • [Brand] implements measures to minimize the environmental impact of its generated waste, and reports on aggregate results regarding its overall waste materials footprint, which was at [...] in [...].

Answer No:

  • [Brand] states that no policy measures are implemented to reduce the environmental impact of its generated waste.

Answer ?:

  • [Brand] does not communicate any information regarding efforts to minimise the impact of its waste generation.
  • [Brand] does not communicate any information about its waste reduction policies.
  • [Brand] communicates a waste reduction policy, but does not report the overall performance.
  • [Brand] does not report on the annual results of its waste reduction policy.
  • [Brand] mentions it is active in waste separation and recycling. However, annual results of its waste reduction policy are not specified.
  • [Brand] implements several measures to reduce its waste material footprint, such as [provide example]. But, concrete aggregate results regarding its waste materials footprint are not made public.
  • [Brand] implements several measures to reduce its waste material footprint, and that it has reduced its [net waste, food waste, etc.*] by [result*]. But, a concrete, aggregate waste materials footprint is not made public
  • [Brand owner] implements several measures to reduce the waste material footprint of its brand [Brand], such as [provide example]. But, concrete aggregate results regarding its waste materials footprint are not made public.
