Has the brand (owner) set a target to make at least its own operations fully climate neutral by 2030, and is the brand on track to achieve this target?

This question relates to Disclosures 305-1, 305-2, and 305-5 of the Global Reporting Initiative, to Criterion 3 'Objectives' of the Sustainability Code from the German Council of Sustainable Development, to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 and to the Paris Agreement.

‘Own operations’ are defined by ‘Scope 1 & 2’ of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (refer to Climate Protection Policy Question 1 for the definition of what is included in 'Scope 1 & 2'). Note: as an exception, you can also reward a "Yes" to a brand / company when energy sources (e.g. wind, solar or hydro) for electricity supply are 100% sustainable. If brands / companies have already (almost) achieved climate neutrality, then there are no further reductions to be made as a result of an already sustainable and/or renewables-based energy source. However, some sustainable energy sources, e.g. biomass such as wood, emit greenhouse gas emissions too. For those emissions, if applicable, it is required to compensate them or reduce them to the specified level via carbon offsets.

Important conditions to reward a "Yes" include the following:

  • Clear progress towards climate neutrality in 2030 (i.e., the brand/company cannot indicate that it will achieve this target without having shown any progress thus far). For example, companies could aim to emit in 2020 only half the amount of greenhouse gases as in 2010, and in 2025 only a quarter (cf. link, page 53.
  • For brands/companies opting to compensate for emissions to reach climate neutrality by 2030, clear statements regarding the source of these credits, additionality, leakage, source, tracking progress etc. are required. See the Carbon Fund website for more information.
  • Actions, initiatives, etc. should be discussed that would indicate progress towards a 2030 goal, thus demonstrating the company is not just discussing this target, but also implementing concrete means to achieve it.

Ranking Guidelines


- The company provides a timetable for how they propose they will achieve climate neutrality by 2030 (i.e. what percentage per year, when they will reach the target accordingly), and is on schedule to reach this target.

- The company already achieved climate neutrality by using sustainable/renewable energy or compensating its greenhouse gas emissions (using a credible carbon offset program). For compensated greenhouse emissions via carbon offsets, the company should report concrete details with regard to type, additionality, numbers and/or projects, leakage, tracking progress, etc.


-No information is given at all or no climate neutrality target is mentioned.

-No percentage or year is given in the timeline for achieving the climate neutrality target.

-Information on the use of sustainable/renewable energy and / or carbon offsets are not concrete with regard to type, additionality, numbers and / or projects, leakage, tracking progress, etc.

-The company aims to be climate neutral by 2030, but is falling behind schedule.


- The brand/company states to not have a goal/target to achieve climate neutrality, or to achieve it at a date later than 2030.

Answering Guidelines
