Question

Does the brand (owner) publish its absolute waste materials footprint and implement concrete policies to minimize waste, by reducing, re-using and recycling, thereby decreasing its waste footprint compared to the previous reporting year?

Reference

While products, as explained previously, generate waste in the form of consumer packaging, we focus for this question on waste generated by the company itself, be it in the production process, in the office space, or elsewhere. Like consumer packaging, company waste may create serious environmental impacts when dumped on a landfill, such as spontaneous combustion and soil/groundwater contamination, but on top of that waste from companies may have a particularly serious environmental impact, for example because some of it may be hazardous.

For this question, we therefore ask companies, according to Disclosure 306-2 of the Global Reporting Initiative, and in line with Criterion 11 'Usage of Natural Resources' and 12 'Resource Management' of the Sustainability Code from the German Council of Sustainable Development to report their total amount of waste in tons by </i>type (e.g., biodegradable, recyclable, etc., or hazardous vs. non-hazardous), to report the weight or volume of each category, and to report the applied disposal methods (e.g., recycling, incineration, landfill, etc.). When a company reports these three metrics (type, weight/volume, disposal method), we consider this as the company reporting its waste footprint.

While we hope that companies will eventually manage to incorporate a zero landfill policy or even become fully circular, for now we ask for a reduction in absolute waste compared to the previous reporting year.

Ranking Guidelines

Answer Yes:

  • [Brand] reports the annual waste by type (e.g., harzardous and non-hazardous), weight (or volume) and way of disposal (e.g., recycling, landfill)

AND

  • [Brand] reports less waste than in the previous year. Net waste reductions can be expressed as an absolute figure (weight or volume) or relative to the quantity of sold product (weight or volume per weight or volume)

Answer No:

  • [Brand] states that it publishes no waste footprint.
  • [Brand] states that it has [increased/maintained] its absolute annual waste footprint between [previous reporting year] and [current reporting year].

Answer ?:

  • [Brand] does not communicate any information regarding its waste generation.
  • [Brand] does not communicate any information about its waste reduction policies.
  • [Brand] communicates a waste reduction policy, but does not report the overall performance.
  • [Brand] does not report on the annual results of its waste reduction policy.
  • [Brand] mentions it is active in waste separation and recycling. However, annual results of its waste reduction policy are not specified.
  • [Brand] implements several measures to reduce its annual absolute waste footprint, such as [provide example]. But, concrete aggregate results regarding its annual absolute waste footprint are not made public.
  • [Brand] implements several measures to reduce its annual absolute waste footprint, and that it has reduced its [net waste, food waste, etc.*] by [result*]. But, a concrete, annual absolute waste footprint is not made public
  • [Brand owner] implements several measures to reduce the annual absolute waste footprint of its brand [Brand], such as [provide example]. But, concrete aggregate results regarding its annual absolute waste footprint are not made public.

Answering Guidelines
